15th August Suwa Fireworks Festival

This is the biggest fireworks festival in Japan and thousands of people from all over come to watch. In Japan firework makers are craftsmen and the display also shows their skills and new firework designs.
I met Madz and Matt at Nagano station and started the 2 hour journey to Suwa. It was a nice journey as the train went all through the beautiful countryside (can tell I've been living in London!). We arrived at Suwa early (11.30am) so that we could get a good spot by the lake....some Japanese people camp out over night! Julia (the AJET president) met us from the train and we went all carried cases of food and beer to our spot. The fireworks didn`t start until 7.30 so we had the afternoon to relax by the lake and mingle with other JETs. There was again, lots of food and drinks stalls around the lake and me and Madz, still not feeling too adventurous, opted for the yaki soba which was delicious....Matt on the other hand had grilled squid on a stick....and lets just say it didn`t agree with him!

With the sun belting down and the beer flowing by late afternoon I was feeling lightheaded so me and Madz went to the station to collect the next group of people from the train (and also to sneak off to Tullys for an iced coffee and sit in the air con!).

The fireworks were amazing and the location made it even more spectacular.

The journey home however was a little less thrilling with thousands of people going to the train at the same time....for the less urbanised folk among us it was quite an experience...for me it was the central line in rush hour!
